Technical Information you should know before your marriage

Enquiries more than three months in advance ink to top of page

Couples seeking information on the possibility of getting married in jersey will be sent a Notice of Marriage form (“Avis de Mariage”) together with a copy of the advice on how to complete the form. If the proposed date of your marriage is more than three months after the date of your enquiry, a booking for a particular date and time may be made, subject to availability (please give us three choices on your booking form). The Notice of Marriage form must be sent to Jersey Wedding Services during the three months preceding the proposed date of your marriage and must arrive at Jersey Wedding Services no later than two weeks before the date of your marriage. The Notice of Marriage form must be accompanied by the required supporting documents and fees, as specified later.

Enquiries within three months of the proposed marriage ink to top of page

Where couples are proposing to marry within three months of the of their date of enquiry, they will be asked to send us the Notice of Marriage form as soon as possible (together with the required supporting documents and fees). You must ensure that they reach us no later than two weeks before the proposed date of your Marriage. You should also give three alternative dates and times for the marriage, if a date and time has not already been confirmed to you.

The Registry Office link to top of page

The Registrar's Office is in a lovely building of character in the Royal Square right in the heart of St Helier. The granite fireplaces and floral arrangements make a relaxed and romantic setting in which to marry. The Office is available for the marriage of non-residents from Monday to Friday, generally between the hours of 11.00 a.m. and 1.00 pm. About twenty minutes is allocated to each ceremony, Saturdays are reserved for local residents. The Registry Office will be closed on Sundays and Public holidays. All marriages in the registry Office take place at the discretion of the Superintendent Registrar.

Making an Application ink to top of page

A Notice of Marriage form cannot be submitted to the Superintendent Registrar more than three months before the date of the intended marriage. Nor must it arrive at his office any less than ten working days before the date of the marriage. The Notice of Marriage form must be completed carefully, in accordance with the instructions provided with it and it must be signed by one of the parties to the marriage.

The form must also be accompanied by certain "required documents", as detailed under the specific heading to be found later in this brochure. When submitting an application by mail, the completed Notice of Marriage form must be accompanied by a good quality photocopy of each these "required documents". "Good quality" means that every word, stamp, seal and signature must be clearly legible on the photocopy and if there is anything on the reverse side of any "required document” then the reverse side must be photocopied and included too.

Please note that you will also be required to produce the originals of these same documents to the Registrar, in person, when you arrive in Jersey.

The photocopies will have been retained by the Superintendent Registrar on
his file and will, in due course, be compared with the originals you produce in
person. It is therefore essential that the documents should be identical. If you fail to bring the original documents with you or if you bring the wrong documents, you cannot be married in Jersey.

Upon receipt of the Notice of Marriage form (and accompanying photocopied documents), Jersey Wedding Services will take them to the Superintendent Registrar, who will satisfy himself of their authenticity. He will then record your details into the "Book of Announcements of Marriages". If a provisional date and time for your marriage has not already been booked with him, an appropriate entry will also be made into the Registrar's diary. The names of both parties to the marriage will be posted on the notice board, in the
Superintendent Registrar's office, for a minimum of 7 clear days. The Notice of Marriage form remains valid for three months from the date you sign it.

The Marriage ink to top of page

No less than three working days before the date of the intended marriage, a representative of Jersey Wedding Services will escort either or both of you to the Office of the Superintendent Registrar, where the main paperwork formalities will be completed. At this appointment, you will be required to produce to the Superintendent Registrar, the originals of the supporting documents, that you sent as photocopies when submitting your Notice of Marriage form by mail. You will be required to sign a solemn declaration, after which you will be issued with your marriage licence. This meeting will also afford you the opportunity of seeing the Registry Office and of discussing with the Superintendent Registrar the format of your wedding ceremony.

You will then be taken to the Parish Registrar, where you will be required to show your licence and produce again the supporting documents, so that the Parish Registrar can prepare the registrys to be signed by you after your marriage. You will be required to have at least two witnesses.
